Key Areas of Role As part of my role I
aim to inspire more young people into taking part in some
form of physical activity, primarily by notifying them of
the physical, mental and social benefits of sport, but also
by broadcasting the lesser-known sports in the hope that
this would interest those groups of young people who may not
specifically enjoy those activities which they take part in
during physical education lessons.
Previous Experience
Prior to becoming a Young Ambassador I ran a
self-defence class for the lower school, using my knowledge
of karate. I also helped to coach the upper and lower school
cricket teams on Friday evenings, which I continue to do,
and anytime I have a free period or a lunchtime I enjoy
going out and assisting with PE lessons and practices. In
addition to these, I established a Sports Council in 2005
which I chair, and this has successfully been fundraising
for our school’s PE Department since its creation. Every
Sunday at my local karate club I help with the lower grades,
whether it’s taking them for warm-ups or coaching them in
their current Kata, and for all my efforts I was immensely
proud to win Sports Leader of the year within the whole of
Eastern Warwickshire last winter.
Sporting Background
In the past I thoroughly any sport that my school had to
offer, and as a result I was in my school’s hockey, netball,
football, cricket, rounders, tag rugby and badminton teams.
Currently my main sport is karate, and has been for about
four years now, leading my to my current grade of 1st Kyu,
and I will go for my black belt before the year is out. In
school at the moment I do not as regularly participate in as
many sports as I now prefer to take more of a coaching role,
and enjoy passing my experience of many of the above sports
on to students lower down the school. Finally, I really
enjoy walking, and usually take my dog out for two hours
every night, while still finding to keep up with my studies,
although I’m not sure how exactly!
Ambitions
On completion of 6th form, and assuming that I get the
right grades (let’s hope the dog walking hasn’t interfered
too much…), I plan to go to university to study sport and
exercise science, whilst gaining qualifications as a coach
in as many sports as I can manage! Eventually I want to end
up as a PE teacher, as my time spent coaching and assisting
in lessons has shown me what a rewarding job this can be,
and it also allows me to continue my passion for sport as a
career. I aim to continue volunteering where possible,
hopefully one day gaining enough knowledge and experience to
set up a girls cricket club in Rugby, as I have found that
the popularity of this sport for girls is increasing every
year.
